Follet takes over ASUC Bookstore

posted July 15, 1998

The ASUC bookstore was one of a handful of campus stores still operated by students until this month, when a private vendor officially took over. In late June the UC Regents approved a 10-year leasing contract with Follett College Stores, the largest campus bookstore operator in the country.

The decision to outsource store operations to a private vendor was part of a recent agreement that ended two and a half years of contention between the ASUC and UC over operation of the store. The store had been losing money for several years and owes the university $2 million. Under the leasing agreement, Follett will substantially upgrade the facilities at the 61,000-square-foot bookstore and retail clothing store.

Follett, which operates franchises at more than 500 colleges in North America, has promised to keep the approximately 70 full-time employees and 200 student employees on the payroll for at least six months.
