$1.25 Million Gift from Rockwell Helps with Campus Renovation

by Karen Holtermann, College of Engineering
posted July 15, 1998

Renovation of two important Berkeley engineering facilities is underway with the help of a $1.25 million gift from Rockwell, a global electronic controls and communications company.

The gift will aid in renovating the Hearst Memorial Mining Building, and has funded a major modernization of an undergraduate electronics laboratory in Cory Hall.

The gift also has endowed the Rockwell International Corporation Distinguished Professorship in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (EECS) to support an eminent faculty member.

"This gift is a terrific model of the impact corporate support can have on the university's ability to excel," said Paul R. Gray, dean of the College of Engineering. "With this creative package of support, Rockwell gives our undergraduates a vital new teaching lab, helps us recreate the Hearst Mining Building as a major center for studies of new materials and assures enduring support for a top faculty member."

Renovation was begun last month on the Hearst Memorial Mining Building, a 90-year-old architectural gem housing studies of materials science and mineral engineering. (see "$68 Million Renovation of Hearst Mining Building Launched July 9", page 2).

The extensively renovated Rockwell Lab in Cory Hall was completed in May, bringing students the chance to study in an industry-caliber lab.

"We wanted to give students at Berkeley a laboratory experience similar to what they will find in industry," says Professor Andy Neureuther, associate chair of the EECS department and the newly appointed Rockwell Distinguished Professor.

Rockwell's gift is part of the New Century Campaign, an effort to raise $1.1 billion in private support for the campus by the year 2001.
