Schell and Tien Discuss China's Future March 4 Posted February 24, 1999 One of the most monumental transitions in history is taking place in China today, according to Orville Schell, dean of the Graduate School of Journalism and an expert in Chinese history. Although the outcome is anything but clear, the fate of the country with the world's largest population will affect us all, he says. On Thursday, March 4, Schell will join another leading expert on China, former Chancellor Chang-Lin Tien, now Berkeley's NEC Distinguished Professor of Engineering, in a dialogue on "Contemporary China: The Winds of Change." Among the questions they will explore is whether China can evolve peacefully -- not only into a free market, but into a more tolerant and pluralistic society. Lydia Liu, professor of East Asian languages and comparative literature, will moderate. The discussion, from 8 to 10 p.m. in 155 Dwinelle Hall, is free and open to the public. Because space is limited, preregistration is required by calling UC Berkeley Extension at 642-4111.
