Peg Berdahl Invites Campus To Join UC AIDS Walk Team

The 12th Annual AIDS Walk San Francisco is set for Sunday, July 18, and Peg Berdahl, honorary chair for Berkeley's contingent of walkers, invites members of the campus community to join the UC team.

The University of California team will include participants from Berkeley, UC San Francisco and Office of the President. Last year, more than 700 UC team participants raised $51,768 in the walk, placing it seventh among the more than 800 teams participating.

In a campus mailing from Mrs. Berdahl later this month, faculty and staff will receive a registration form and complete information about the walk.

Historical Society Offers Tour of Campus Sculptures

The Berkeley Historical Society continues its Sunday morning spring walking tours May 23 with an exploration of campus art led by Steve Finacom, a BHS board member who staffs the campus outdoor art subcommittee.

Finacom will explain campus sculptures dating back to the 1890s -- shedding light on which sculpture was done by Mount Rushmore's creator, where a sleek Bufano bear resides, why a sculpted cannon ball sits on a fountain, and the links between Russian bears, Venetian lions and Berkeley.

The two-hour tour, limited to 25 people, starts at 10 a.m. Requested donation is $5 for BHS members, $10 for non-members. Prepaid reservations have priority. Hire a Berkeley Youth This Summer

Each year the Summer Youth Employment Program brings 30 to 40 local youths to campus to work in paid positions from early June through late August. High school students and recent graduates work in a variety of jobs ranging from office clerks and receptionists to food service and maintenance workers.

Conference on Environment and Human Population

Which poses a greater threat to the environment: human population growth or mismanagement of natural resources? What are the real causes of the environmental degradation now threatening the Earth's ecosystems?

These questions will be explored at "Population and the Environment: Too Many People and/or Poor Management of Resources," a conference at Alumni House on May 24. The event is free and begins at 8:30 a.m.

Giving the keynote address will be Joel Cohen, professor of populations at The Rockefeller University and Columbia University and 1999 co-winner of the prestigious Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement. Cohen will discuss "How Population, the Environment, Economics and the Culture Interact."

May 20: Out and Equal In the Workplace

Sexual minorities and the workplace will be the topic of a panel discussion Thursday, May 20.

Panelists Nancy Wohlforth, Janice Kimball and Chris Romero will discuss workplace rights for lesbians, gays and bisexuals in the labor community and unionism in the "queer" community.

The event, which is free and open to the public, takes place at the Institute of Industrial Relations, Director's Lounge, 2521 Channing Way, from 4 to 6 p.m.

Recycling Program for Used Readers and Notebooks

Don't throw away those old course readers and notebooks, recycle them in a collection drive, sponsored by S.O.U.R.C.E., in progress through May 20.

Materials can be dropped off at most residence halls, the Valley Life Sciences Building library and outside 504 Eshleman Hall.

The readers and notebooks will be reconditioned and then distributed at the beginning of the fall semester for reuse by other students and instructors. A list of available readers is posted on the S.O.U.R.C.E. web site at www.ocf.berkeley.edu/ ~source.

S.O.U.R.C.E. (Students Organized for Using Resources Conscientiously and Efficiently) is a Berkeley student group dedicated to reducing the amount of waste created on campus. For information, call 643-4612.

Follow Your Nose May 22 To Lawrence Hall of Science

Celebrate National Sense of Smell Day at the Lawrence Hall of Science Saturday, May 22 from noon to 3 p.m. The event is free with museum admission.

"Noses-on" activities include "Insects: On the Smell Trail," exploring how ants and other insects use their sense of smell to identify food, family members and nests; "Naturally Fragrant Potpourri," which gives participants a chance to create their own fragrant potpourri; "Taste and Smell," on how the sense of smell affects how things taste; and "Artificial and Real," a test to see if the nose knows the difference between natural and artificial fragrances.

Campus Staff Appreciation Summerfest Set for June 9

The campus hosts a giant party for staff Wednesday, June 9 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the base of the campanile.

"Summerfest" activities include live music, refreshments, games, free massages and information tables.
