Literary Events for All Ages In Cal Day's April 17 Cornucopia

At noon in Wheeler Hall, professors Stephen Booth, Kamilla Elliot and Jeffrey Knapp will lead a discussion titled "Shakespeare in the 21st Century" on current and emerging ways of understanding Shakespeare's plays. Across campus at Tolman Hall, leading children's authors and illustrators will sign books and tell stories from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. as part of the eighth annual Children's Literature Festival. The festival features Robert San Souci, author of "Mulan," and a concert for kids by folksinger Jose-Luis Orozco. Workshops include an introduction on how to break into the world of children's literature and a panel on the universality of African American children's literature. Acclaimed novelist Amy Tan, author of "Joy Luck Club," "The Kitchen God's Wife," and "The Hundred Secret Senses," will give an address at 2:30 p.m. in Wheeler Auditorium. At 1 p.m., African American Studies Professor June Jordan and her students will take their poetry to the people at 145 Dwinelle Hall. Dwinelle Hall will also host a screening of "Berkeley in the '60s" from 2 to 4:30 p.m., followed by a behind-the-scenes discussion of the art and challenges of filming the documentary.
