Berkeley Retirement Center Honors Kragen posted May. 6, 1998 The UC Berkeley Retirement Center has a place and a name and a higher profile than in the past. Located in 2 Boalt Hall, the center serves all retired faculty and staff through programs, services and a reference library. On April 1, more than 100 staff, faculty, administrators, alums and retirees gathered to celebrate naming the centers conference room for professor emeritus Adrian Kragen. A strong advocate for a comprehensive campus retirement center, Kragen was instrumental in securing funding for the center and its Boalt Hall space. He was on hand for the afternoon ceremony. Professor Kragen epitomizes the vitality and drive of Berkeley retirees who remain active in campus life, said Shelley Glazer, director of the center. He retired for the first time in 1973, but it didnt last long. He taught at Hastings from 1973 to 1980, and then at Berkeley from 1980 to 1994. At 90, he still comes into his office once a week and actively supports and participates in Boalt Hall and Cal Athletics During the April 1 naming ceremony, Glazer announced expanded service to retired faculty and staff, including programs on finances, arts and leisure, computer basics, health and insurance options. The Center, she said, is creating a bridge for retirees to existing campus services and programs such as the International Travel Clinic at the University Health Services, and free hours at the University Art Museum. The Center is a way for the university to say thank you to retirees for their years of dedicated service, Glazer said. It also enables retired faculty and staff to maintain their connection with Cal. During the naming ceremony, law dean Herma Hill Kay and executive vice chancellor and provost Carol Christ lauded Kragen for his many contributions to the university and the State of California. Glazer said the Retirement Center is working with the Human Resources benefits unit to expand the current pre-retirement planning program. The UC Berkeley Retirement Center is home to the Berkeley Emeriti Association and the Ber-keley Retirees Association. It is supported by a policy board whose founding members include professors emeritus Sheldon Messinger, Melvin Webber, Donald Riley and Sheldon Rothblatt and staff retirees Joseph Toby, Claire Smith and Morley Walker. Robert Connick is leading the centers endowment campaign.
