News Briefs Posted September 22, 1999 Deadline for Award Nominations Is Oct. 8 The deadline for nominations for the 1999-2000 Distinguished Teaching Awards is Friday, Oct. 8. Guidelines and procedures for this year's awards were recently distributed by the Committee on Teaching to all academic departments. They can be viewed online at uga.berkeley.edu/sled/dta.html.

Employees may invest their defined-contribution and tax-deferred 403(b) plan contributions in mutual funds managed by Fidelity Investments. "Plant Morphology for Beginners" and "Edible and Medicinal Mushrooms: Cultures and Techniques" are two workshops being offered this fall by the Jepson Herbarium, a natural history museum on campus. In the morphology class, which takes place Saturday, Oct. 9 and 16, beginning botanists, nature lovers or avid gardeners can explore the basic concepts of plant structure and function. Cost is $80 for members of the museum and $90 for non-members. The mushroom workshop will introduce participants to the necessary skills, techniques and equipment needed to develop mushroom farms and produce edible crops within a short time. Cost for the Saturday, Nov. 13 and 14 workshop is $200 for members and $220 for non-members.

On Saturday, Oct. 16, a memorial celebration will be held for Louise Thompson Patterson, a Harlem Renaissance intellectual, long-time activist and Berkeley alumna, who died Aug. 27, at age 97. The event will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. at Alumni House. Patterson was one of the first African-American women to graduate from Berkeley, receiving a B.A. in economics cum laude in 1923. She served as the literary secretary to Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston and organized international support for scholar/activist Angela Davis, as well as many other political prisoners. The Department of African American Studies honored Patterson in 1991 with the Fannie Lou Hamer Award. An award in Patterson's name is now given annually.
