Versatile saxophonist Branford Marsalis brings his quartet to Zellerbach Hall Sunday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m.

Marsalis has enjoyed an eclectic career, encompassing jazz, pop and fusion musical styles.

A member of his talented brother's Wynton Marsalis Quintet, Marsalis created controversy by leaving that successful group to join Sting's rock band in 1985. Branford further baffled jazz purists by becoming the band leader for the Tonight Show with Jay Leno in 1992.

Marsalis has collaborated with the likes of B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, Bruce Hornsby and rappers Gang Starr and Guru. His creative endeavors, both in and out of jazz, have won him two Grammies.

In addition to recording and performing, Branford is a faculty member of the jazz studies department at Michigan State University and continues as host of National Public Radio's award-winning "JazzSet" program.

Sunday's performance features Jeff "Tain" Watts on drums, Eric Revis on bass and Joey Calderazzo on piano.
