Value Packs Offer Tax-Free Transportation Posted September 22, 1999 Campus commuters can save on their transportation expenses by having the costs deducted from their paycheck before taxes are taken out. Two packages are available for Berkeley employees -- one for those who use public transportation, and another for those who drive to work and park in campus lots. The Daily Parking Option is ideal for commuters who currently purchase a Daily Hang Tag and drive to campus three to four times a week. The cost -- which includes the purchase of a Daily Hang-Tag Parking Permit for $8; a Parking Value card with a monthly value of $55, sold for $38.50 and good for the first 11 visits to campus per month; the ability to park in faculty/staff campus lots by purchasing a daily coupon from the pay-and-display machines at $5 a visit; and the annual transportation of $35 -- are all deducted from your gross salary. For information on this option, call Parking and Transportation at 642-4283. The Public Transit Option is for members of the New Directions Transit Discount Program and/or commuters who use public transit almost every day. Employees can select one of several transit choices: one or two $48 value BART tickets; one monthly AC Transit pass; two half-monthly BART Plus tickets, valid on BART, AC Transit, Muni and other bus systems; or four AC Transit ticket booklets. This option includes a free campus shuttle pass and eligibility to purchase two Occasional Use Parking coupon booklets per year at $3 a coupon. For information on this option, call Berkeley TRiP Commute Store at 643-7665. Participants must submit their application forms by the 10th of the month for deductions to take effect on paychecks beginning on the first of the following month. Both options are non-refundable. Cancellations or option changes are allowed once per year. Applications can be downloaded at the parking and transportation Web site, located at http://publicsafety.berkeley.edu/p&t/pre-tax.html.
